Last issue’s (To-l’dot) TTriddles:
[1] Change the first of the three letters to the letter that follows it in the Alef-Bet and you change from Hebrew to Aramaic
GUR BAARETZ HAZOT… G-d said to Yitzchak that he should dwell in this land (meaning Eretz Yisrael). GUR, spelled GIMEL-VAV-REISH. Change the GIMEL to a DALET and you get DUR,which is Targum Onkeles for GUR.
[2] married, married, sent, crowned
In Parshat Toldot, we are told that Yitzchak was forty years of age when he married Rivka. In the same sedra, we are told that Eisav was forty when he married. The commentaries tell us that Eisav tried to emulate his father in various ways. Only two other times in Tanach do we find someone at the age of forty. In the book of Yehoshua we are told that Kalev was forty years old when he was sent to spy out the Land. And in Shmuel bet we are told that ISH BOSHET son of Shaul, when he reigned over Israel. (He reigned for two years while David was first king of Judah. Seven years later, David reigned over all of Israel for another 33 years. No one really knows what happened during the five years following the murder of Ish Boshet and David’s ascent to Jerusalem.)
[3] poor confused strawberry
Poor = DAL, DALET-LAMED. Confused means jumble the letters. Strawberry = TUT, TAV-VAV-TAV. Taking these five letters and rearranging them, we get TO-L’DOT.
[4] Twice on Motza"Sh Toldot
This one was kind of easy, but with a little misdirection. It would have been a total give-way had it been stated thusly: Twice - on Motza’ei Shabbat and on Toldot. The answer is, of course, V’YITEIN L’CHA ELOKIM MITAL HASHAMAYIM UMISH- MANEI HAARETZ… - the beginning of the blessing of Yitzchak to Yaakov and the first p’sukim of the Motza’ei Shabbat P’SUKEI B’RACHA, verses of blessing, that some (many) say on Motza’ei Shabbat before ALEINU.
[5] The city streets are well lit
RECHOVOT. It’s a city in Israel (founded in 1890, it is Israel’s 13th most populous city with over 112,000 people. Rechovot means streets. And, in Toldot, Rechovot is the name Yitzchak gave to the third and only successful well he dug. The word lit has nothing to do with Rechovot - it’s in the TTriddle to make it read as a sentence.
[6] The kingdom in Midyan, and therefore like a cup and the queen
The kingdom = HAM’LUCHA. in Midyan = B’MIDYAN. and therefore = V’LACHEIN. like a cup = K’KOS. and the queen = V’HAMALKA. Each of these five Hebrew words has a numeric value of 106, the number of p’sukim in Parshat Tol’dot.
[7] He’ll have to wait for Shabbat HaGadol
One of the last prophets, MALACHI. His book(let) is read from for the haftara of Parshat Tol’dot. However, because Shabbat was Erev Rosh Chodesh, the reading from Malachi was preempted by the MACHAR CHODESH reading from the book of Sh’muel. The next time (and only other time) we read from Malachi will be Shabbat HaGadol.
[8] MazalPic
Over the years, the most frequent TTreader feedback on the MazalPic has been H(S)M. Last month, he suggests a pair of lips to represent a kiss and a heart, to give KISLEV. We took the suggestion, but went with a Hershey’s Kiss instead of the lips. MazalPics are more often based on the mazal of the month (Zodiac sign), but sometimes it is the month’s name that is depicted.
[9] Old business
A number of weeks ago, we presented the topic of TAL UMATAR in the Lead Tidbit with a hypothetical situation involving an Israeli studying in El Paso Texas. We never explained our choice of El Paso - it was not random. El Paso is located at a latitude of 31 degrees and 47 minutes. So is Jerusalem. Traveling exactly due west from Jerusalem will eventually bring you to El Paso.
On that “due west” journey, through what European countries will you pass? The answer might surprise some of you (not AK) - You will not touch Europe at all. Your journey will take you through some countries in north Africa, across the Atlantic north of Florida, You will travel through parts of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. After your stay in El Paso, you will go through parts of New Mexico and Arizona, not California. The Pacific…
