 ine the multiple hypotheses that\nhave been proposed to explain the cause 
 of autism. Some confusion has arisen in defining\nexactly what are the spe
 cific criteria to be applied in diagnosing this disorder\, to distinguish 
 it\nfrom other neuropathologic conditions. In recent years\, the issue of 
 autism has reached major\nlevels of concern and attention among scientific
  and general audiences. The authors have\nstriven to make this book suitab
 le for both the professional and the lay reader.\nAlthough much research e
 ffort and substantial funding amounts have been devoted to\nuncovering the
  cause of autism\, little is currently known with certainty. Much like oth
 er unsolved\nmedical mysteries\, autism is believed to result from an envi
 ronmental trigger interacting with a\ngenetic propensity. As a result of t
 he public alarm that has justifiably developed\, numerous\nhypotheses have
  been generated without sufficient research evidence to identify the main\
 npathologic process(es) causing autism. No one explanation has sufficient 
 supporting data to\nclaim a clear\, comprehensive cause-and-effect relatio
 nship. Unfortunately\, quite a few of these\nunverified proposals have per
 sisted for various reasons.\nSome of these proposals\, such as a purported
  link with vaccination\, are still believed to be\nvalid by the general pu
 blic\, in spite of numerous studies negating or refuting them. A major\nso
 urce of this confusion has resulted from the tendency of the popular press
  to overemphasize\nthe meaning of “breakthrough” scientific discoverie
 s\, many of which are repetitions of previously\ndiscarded or discredited 
 claims. The public is often uncertain and ill-informed about what issues\n
 are well-founded and deserve additional attention and credible support. He
 nce\, the primary goal\nof this book is to separate fact from fiction for 
 ultimately elucidating the true etiology(ies) of\nautism. In this process\
