Kibbutz Yad Mordechai is between Aza and Ashkelon, was founded in the 1930’s & named for Mordechai Anielewicz, the leader of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. It played a strategic role along the road between Aza and Tel Aviv in the 1948 Israel War of Independence – stopping the enemy advance from reaching Tel Aviv.

- Gesher Ad Halom – a historical landmark at the entrance to Ashdod, it was northernmost point in Israel where the Egyptian army advanced during the War of Independence
